Sports Co-ordinator
At Te Akau ki Papamoa School, we place a strong emphasis on sports and physical education, and are recognised for our high performance across all codes. Since 2010, a specialist Sports Co-ordinator role has further enhanced the opportunities for all learners to succeed in the sporting arena.
Each class receives a fitness session and a skill-based lesson led by the sports co-ordinator each week. These sessions are over and above regular classroom physical education and have helped improve student outcomes by increasing the:
- number of tamariki involved in sports both in and out of school
- skill level, fine motor skills and teamwork abilities of all children
- wellbeing, mana and confidence in learners
The excellent results we have achieved since introducing a full-time sports co-ordinator are testament to the success of the programme. We now have champions in Bay of Plenty competitions including rugby, rugby league, waterpolo, rippa rugby, kiwitag, and flippa-ball.
‘The focus on physical activity, fitness, and healthy choices is contributing to student wellbeing, enthusiasm and success across the curriculum and in sporting activities.’ ERO Report 2014
